Product Manager

Bedrock Analytics is looking for an exceptional product manager, with a background in SaaS applications for the enterprise. You should have a proven track record of delivering friendly, effective, useful web applications that enterprise customers actually use. You have an eye for design, and you understand how to synthesize sometimes-contradictory feedback from end users into a UI that they enjoy interacting with and that genuinely helps them to get their jobs done.

You like working in an Agile best-practices environment. You understand the importance of balancing a unified product vision with a willingness to let individual contributors innovate. You’re comfortable talking and collaborating with all your constituencies – end users, sales people, developers, executive management, and others.

Challenges

A few of the fun problems we're working on:

  • Analytics for People without the Time or the Inclination
Our customers are focused on their sales. They recognize the need for analytics insights in their job, but they are not data analysts and they do not have time to play with what-if scenarios. We anticipate their needs.
  • Data-Driven Stories
Our customers need insight-driven sales stories that they can create quickly, that are effective from a sales perspective, and that are factually true. We guide them through this process.
  • Creating Analytics Applications, not Platforms
Our system integrates analysis and visualization into application software that serves a purpose. We’re not trying to be another reporting tool, but instead a new category of SaaS application.

About You

  • You ship and iterate, but with vision. You've built systems you can point to. You care about your customers’ needs, and you’re able to break a feature down into incremental deliverables that build to a coherent whole.
  • You work for startups. The slow pace of larger companies makes you crazy.
  • You're pragmatically Agile. We run an Agile shop, but we are not pedantic about it. We care about delivering for our users, not being buzzword-compliant.
  • You enjoy your work. We work hard, but we care a lot about team spirit and collaboration. We also try not to take ourselves too seriously.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in a technical or liberal arts field with a strong academic record. But if you're just really good and you never finished High School, that's fine too.
  • At least 3 years of web application product management experience using agile development techniques.
  • Strong listening, speaking and writing skills, since you’ll be writing a lot of stories and shepherding them through the product development process.
  • At least some design skill and familiarity with design tools would be helpful.
  • This position is full-time and on-site in our Oakland, CA office.

Bonus points: Links to running systems you’ve worked on as product manager.

Front-End Software Developer (All Levels)

Bedrock Analytics is looking for exceptional front-end web developers to help us create a platform for story-driven analytics. You have a deep knowledge of DHTML, Javascript, CSS, and cross-browser quirks. You have worked with libraries and frameworks like Backbone, and you are familiar with or have worked with newer frameworks like Angular and React. You have a track record of delivering responsive user interfaces that people enjoy using, and that support enhancement over time.

You like working in an Agile best-practices environment. You understand the importance of testable, modular, efficient code, so that's what you write. You work with Cucumber, Selenium, and other UI testing frameworks to ensure that your stuff works reliably and across different clients.

Challenges

Some of the fun problems we're working on:

  • Guided Story Creation
Our customers need to deliver data-driven stories, but often lack a background in analytics. Bedrock Analytics helps them create compelling sales stories based on their market data. This requires a UI that guides the user while exposing relevant choices in an easy-to-understand way.
  • Beautiful, Compelling Visualizations
Effective and clear visualizations are critical to our customers’ success. We not only provide standard charts, but also unique visualizations targeted to specific stories and data scenarios. Come help us create them.
  • Enjoyable, Approachable UI
We aim to deliver an application that allows regular people to deliver meaningful, data-driven results to their customers. This requires us to create a user interface that enables the choices people need to make, but does not confuse or clutter with extra affordances. There are lots of powerful, complex analytical systems. We want to be powerful and simple.

About You

  • You ship. You've built systems you can point to. You deliver quality software quickly, and you care about helping your users achieve their goals.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of front-end web development using Agile development techniques.
  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science preferred.
  • Understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript principles and philosophies such as specificity and progressive enhancement. You know how and when to use them to your advantage.
  • Experience with HighCharts or similar charting libraries.
  • Experience with advanced data visualization libraries, such as d3, is a plus
  • This position is full-time and on-site in our Oakland office.

You should have a proven track record of delivering robust, high-availability services and understand the ins and outs of scalable data processing and analytics. You can envision the way a system works end-to-end and how the services that compose it work together, and you enjoy creating new and effective software. You are interested in the different ways data can be organized, analyzed, and visualized to make effective use of the insights it contains.

You like working in an Agile best-practices environment. You understand the importance of testable, modular, efficient code, so that's what you write. Ideally, you will have been building cloud-based systems with a similar DevOps stack to ours - AWS, Chef, etc.

Challenges

A few of the fun problems we're working on:

  • Predictive Insights and Recommendations
Identify and recommend products and markets that represent opportunities for our customers to capture more business.
  • Data-Driven Stories
Develop an easy-to-use framework that allows our customers to create insight-driven sales stories quickly and easily.
  • Microservice-based Analytics
Deliver a system that allows flexible, on-demand numerical modeling/optimization and other advanced analytics in an end-user consumable fashion.

About You

  • You ship. You've built systems you can point to. You deliver quality software quickly, and you care about helping your users achieve their goals.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science preferred with a strong academic record (MS/PhD or equivalent a plus). But if you're just really good and you never finished High School, that's fine too.
  • At least 3 years of web application programming experience using agile development techniques.
  • Strong Java, Scala, and/or Python skills and object oriented design experience, including working knowledge of core libraries and design patterns. For Java and Scala developers, experience with the Play framework and Akka would be handy.
  • Good database development skills including SQL, a solid understanding of both relational and NoSQL database technologies, and logical and physical data modeling.
  • This position is full-time and on-site in our Oakland, CA office.

You look forward to adding new leads to your list and working them until they tell you they can’t live without you.
